Career: Dr. Dickson Aleroh On The Road To Success

I started out as an A student in a public school in West Africa. Then, I continued here in the UK as a 15 year old at Warwick Park Secondary School (now known as Harris Academy) in Peckham. Moreover, after completing my AS/A levels in college (Lewisham College), I went on to successfully complete an undergraduate Masters degree in Chemistry (2.1 class) in 2007.

In that same year, I was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Downland prize for Best Chemistry Project for London. Of course, I wasn't going to stop there, seeing my insatiable test for knowledge expansion in the field of Chemistry.

As a result, at the end of 2007, I applied and was awarded the engineering and physical sciences research council (EPSRC) industrial case studentship to study a PhD electrochemistry of lithium oxygen batteries at the University of Southampton.

During this period I spent some time at Qinetiq UK (a private defense company) working as a research contractor. However, due to unforeseen family issues, I had only completed the Master of Philosophy level, which I was awarded in 2009. Upon completion, I made my way to London and was invited for another PhD degree, but this time around I was on the look out for something different and more synthesis based.

As a result, I took on a Doctoral training degree in Polymer/Materials engineering and synthesis for organic photovoltaics and microelectronics applications at Imperial College London and Queen Mary University of London. Although, it was very arduous and stressful, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Upon submission of a 320 pages thesis and examinations, I was awarded a PhD degree on December 2012.

If anyone is looking to embark on such peregrination should be prepared for the unforeseen, because, the road to success, though simple when you follow some set principles, it also not tiled with gold. You will lose many envious friend along the way, and may face a lot of discouragement. But, you should remain focus on your target goal. In addition, stress and uncertainty is part of the journey. One should learn to remediate these by laying off and returning with a rejuvenated mind.

Furthermore, no one told me this before, that every success has a price attached. I paid mine (you will find out for yourself) and if you are to succeed in life, you may have to as well.
Last but not least, God Almighty was my source of solace, whenever, I ran into difficulty, and I overcomed by HIS grace.

As stated above God Almighty helped me to surpass the challenges encountered. and in HIS words I discovered that I could achieve anything in life through his power. In addition. Persistence, steadfastness, self-discipline, patience, and integrity all helped, as well.

I feel so inspired reading this. Thank you Dr Dickson Aleroh for this brilliant insight into the realities of reaching your educational goals.
